Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a magic-user spell.
Level: 1 | School: Evocation |
Components: V, S, M (fine ink of at least 200 gp value per bottle) | |
Range: 0 | Casting Time: 1 round |
Duration: 1 hour/level | Saving Throw: Special |
Target: One spell inscription |
The target spell is transcribed into a writing surface of the caster's choosing. The transcription takes 1 hour, during which the caster is in a trance, and is easily surprised. To successfully scribe the spell, the caster must make a successful save vs. magic. If the spell is less than 1 level greater than the spellcaster can currently cast, they gain a +2 bonus to this save. If the spell is more than 2 levels higher, the saving throw takes a -1 penalty for each level that the target spell exceeds the highest spell level the caster can currently cast. If the saving throw fails, the caster takes 1d4 points of damage per spell level, and is knocked unconscious for 1d4 turns. The damage is healed at the rate of 1d4 per day.
DM's Advice: Ink for this spell is 10% likely to be found in a town, and 20% likely to be found in a city, being sold by apothecaries and alchemists. It is sold in a flask that is sufficient for scribing 2-4 spells, and the vial costs 200-500 gp. It's up to you what this is made out of (ichor of a slithering tracker, octopus ink, powdered gems, etc.).
