Tomb of Horrors (S1) is an adventure module published for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition in 1978. It was the first in the S (Special) series of modules.

Gary Gygax originally wrote the module for the 1975 Origins convention. It was later updated and published for AD&D 1st edition in 1978.
Reception and influence
Sequels and remakes
The module was revised with a new cover in for the 1981 printing. Tomb of Horrors was later included in the compilations S1-4 Realms of Horror (1987) and Dungeons of Dread{{UnknownBook}}.
Sequels to the module include Return to the Tomb of Horrors (1998) for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition (which included a reprint of the original module), Tomb of Horrors (4e) (2010) for Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition, and Tomb of Annihilation (2017) for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition.
The original module was also updated for subsequent editions: as a free release for Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 on Halloween 2005; as a 4th edition update for RPGA members; for the D&D Next playtest rules in Dungeon #213 (Apr 2013) (and a bestiary-only conversion in one of the playtest packets); and as part of the 5th edition compilation Tales from the Yawning Portal (2017).
A reprint of the 1975 version of Tomb of Horrors was included in the special edition of Art & Arcana (2018).
Novelization
A novel based on the module, Tomb of Horrors by Keith Francis Strohm, was released in 2002.
Outside D&D
The Tomb of Horrors featured as one of the challenges in Ready Player One by Ernest Cline. However, the final confrontation with Acererak was replaced with a best-of-three tournament of the arcade game Joust.
