Svava is the wife of the barbarian Angantyr and mother to the viking Hervor.[1]

Creative origins[edit | edit source]

The story of Hervor is detailed in Hervarar saga ok Heiðreks (The Saga of Hervör and Heidrek).[2][3] The name of Hervor's mother is cited only once, in a poem called The Waking of Angantýr.[4]

Hervor's mother varies between surviving manuscripts of the saga. In some she is named Sváfu, while in others she is named Tófu, or left un-named entirely. She is described as the daughter of the jarl Bjarmar.[2]
