Svafnir the Sleep-Bringer is a linnorm who helps Nidhoggr bite at the roots of the world tree Yggdrasil.[1]

Creative origins[]

Svafnir originates in Norse mythlogy. It is described in Grímnismál as an ormr or wyrm. Its name is thought to mean "Sleep-Bringer".

Stanza 43 of Grímnismál, in which Sváfnir, Ofnir and other dragons are named, is thought by some scholars to be a later insertion. In the final stanza of the poem, Odin gives Sváfnir as one of his own aliases. No other information about Sváfnir appears in surviving Norse texts.[2]
