The starfly is a butterfly-like plant native to wildspace whose appearance is considered a good omen, and can provide food to hungry spelljammer crews.
The starfly is actually the seed of a species of spacefaring tree called mother-trees. The large, colorful "wings" of the seed are actually leaves that capture sunlight to feed the sugary fruit used to supply the seed with nutrients. The fruit itself is delicious, and the starfly is considered an omen of wealth and happiness to those who encounter them in wildpsace.
The spacefaring elves have a special relationship with starflies and mother-trees, as their breeding programs have given birth to specially selected starflies that mature but remain mobile, and allow the elves to create useful, living items, such as the gadabout, and even the elven armada ship.
