Creates a magically obscured snare trap.

AD&D[]

Snare[]

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a druid spell.

Level: 2 School: Enchantment/Charm
Components: V, S, M (mistletoe, snake skin, and sinew from a strong animal woven into the cord)
Range: Touch Casting Time: 3 rounds
Duration: Permanent Saving Throw: None
Area: 2' diameter circle, +1' per 6 levels

The caster creates a magical snare out of any flexible vine, thong, or rope. The cord blends with its background, being 90% undetectable, and it forms a loop that will ensnare a creature that steps within it.

If a supple tree is nearby, the spell will make it part of the snare, causing it to bend, and then suddenly snap upright when the trap is triggered, dealing 1d6 damage and lifting the creature off the ground (strangling it if the head/neck is caught). If there is nothing to attach the snare to, it will caus the cord to enwrap the triggering creature entirely, tightly binding it.

In any case, once bound, a creature requires a Strength of 23 or greater to escape. Every hour after being triggered, the magic strengthening the snare fades, lowering the Strength needed to escape by 1 point per hour, until 6 hours have passed (allowing an 18 Strength to break it). Once 12 hours have passed, the magic fades entirely, and the snare ceases to be able to hold any creature.

DM's Advice: The binding can be cut by a magic blade, or any sharp implement with a +2 bonus to hit or better.
