D2 Shrine of the Kuo-Toa is an adventure module for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition released in August 1978. It is for up to nine characters of levels 8 to 10.

Official synopsis[]

This module contains background information, a large-scale referee's map with a matching partial map for players, referee's notes, special exploration and encounter pieces, a large map detailing a temple complex area, encounter and map matrix keys, and an additional section pertaining to a pair of unique new creatures for use with this adventure and the game as a whole.

A complete setting for play of ADVANCED DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is contained herein. This adventure can be played alone, as the second part of a series of three modules (with DESCENT INTO THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH, D1, and VAULT OF THE DROW, D3); or as the fourth part of a continuing scenario (DUNGEON MODULES G1, T2, G3, D1, D2, D3 and Q1, QUEEN OF THE DEMONWEB PITS).

The book was written by Gary Gygax. Art was provided by David C. Sutherland III.

Release[]

Shrine of the Kuo-Toa was released by TSR in August 1978 for $[missing data] US.

The module received five printings in monochrome with green background, plus a UK release and an Australian release.[1]

On April 12, 2016, it was re-released in digital format. It is currently available on DriveThruRPG and Dungeon Masters Guild for $4.99.

Critical reception[]

As of 2023, Shrine of the Kuo-Toa reached the rank of Gold seller on DriveThruRPG.

Influence on other works[]

The module D2 was combined with D1 to produce a single product, D1-2 Descent into the Depths of the Earth (1981), and later the combined book D3 Vault of the Drow (1978).
