Sand devils are hellforged devils made up of sand which act as informants in the Nine Hells.[1]

Description[]

Sand devils are human-shaped, with thin and puny seeming limbs and long, slender arms. They have rough, grainy exteriors due to the fine, powdery sand that makes up their forms, and their faces have leering eyes and wide mouths filled with needle-like teeth.[1]

Abilities[]

Sand devils can regularly breathe out clouds of sand, filling the area with debris that obscures all normal vision and leaves air-breathing creatures choking on dust. They can also transform themselves into patches or clouds of sands, similar to how the gaseous form]] spell works, rendering them slow but stealthier. Their long arms give them extended reach, they cannot be harmed with fire, and they are excellent burrowers.[1]

Combat[]

Sand devils rely on surprise in combat, rarely confronting the enemy in the open due to their weakness. They are ambush fighters, lying in wait for unsuspecting opponents to pass before leaping to attack. Occasionally they work with obsidian or coal devils to capture or kill difficult targets, waiting for their allies to drive unsuspecting enemies to their sand forms before trapping the enemy in a pincer maneuver. They exhale their stinging sand when threatened.[1]

Society[]

Sand devils act as spies in the hellforged legions, using their ability to disperse into sand to hide almost anywhere, from dunes, to holes, to the nooks and crannies of the mansions of archdevils. Once in position, they lie in wait collecting select information before quietly shifting their sand somewhere they can safely reform and report back to their superiors. They rarely operate on their own, acting in swarms as big as eight and usually working for an archdevil or lead devil with specific instructions for them. Occasionally they work with obsidian or coal devils to capture or kill difficult targets, waiting for their allies to drive unsuspecting enemies to their sand forms before trapping the enemy in a pincer maneuver.[1]

Minor necromancers and diabolists sometimes employ sand devils as guardians or familiars, but mortals otherwise rarely encounter them.[1]
