Creates a fire in the caster's hand that can ignite flammable materials.

Original D&D[]

The spell first appeared in Supplement 3: Eldritch Wizardry, for the druid.

  • Spell Level 2
  • Duration 2 turns/level

Creates a flame in the caster's hand. The flame shed slight like a lantern, and the caster can use it to ignite combustible materials the caster touches. The caster can also hurl the flame up to 3" to ignite a combustible material, though doing so extinguishes the flame.

AD&D[]

Produce Flame[]

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a druid spell.

Level: 2 School: Alteration
Components: V, S, M (mistletoe)
Range: 0 Casting Time: 4 segments
Duration: 2 rounds/level Saving Throw: None
Effect: A small tongue of flame in the caster's hand

A flame with brightness equal to a torch springs from the caster's hand. The flame can ignite flammable materials (paper, cloth, dry wood, etc.). The caster can hurl the flame 4" and it will then flash upon impact, igniting combustibles with a 3' diameter of its center of impact, and then being itself extinguished. The caster can snuff the created flame at any time, though ignited items remain on fire.

DM's Advice: Any target of the hurled missile is considered to be short range. On a miss, use the rules for grenade-like missiles to determine where the flame lands.
