Platinum is a precious metal.

Characteristics[]

Platinum is heavy silvery-white metal. It does not rust, and is resistant to tarnishing. It is often mined as a pure metal rather than as an ore. It is especially rare, and more valuable than gold.

Uses[]

Platinum is primarily valued as a precious metal, used to mint coinage and produce jewelry and artworks.

Coins made of platinum are minted on many worlds, although not all cities and nations use this rare metal in their standard currency. Platinum coins are typically worth ten times as much as gold coins.

Platinum is too soft to be used to make weapons or armor. However, the mages of Faerûn possess a technique to produce hardened platinum which can be worked like steel. Armor made in this way protects the wearer from cold and sound-based attacks, while weapons of this are especially dense, and deadly in the hands of one specially trained to wield such an exceptionally heavy weapon.[1]

Dragons who serve as clerics to Bahamut, the Platinum Dragon, sometimes own holy symbols made from platinum to honor that deity.[2]
