The Occult Slayer prestige class first appeared in Dragon Magazine #303 and was updated and reprinted in Complete Warrior. The prestige class represents a warrior who specializes in slaying spellcasters, foiling their magic, and dealing them deadly blows. Occult Slayers believe that all magic - arcane, divine, and otherwise - is not meant to be wielded by mortals. Thus, they seek out powerful spellcasters and using only their own training and power, destroy them. Because they cannot gather in great numbers for fear of being discovered, occult slayers have no formal schools. Individual occult slayers pass on their talents to individual apprentices who show promise.

Most occult slayers are those who have never cast a spell - fighters and barbarians primarily, though with a sprinkling of rogues and monks as well. Of those who are capable of spellcasting, rangers are the most common to give up their magic and become occult slayers. Other classes rely too much on magic of one sort or another to be welcome into this prestige class without surrendering their skills.


Occult slayers must show an understanding of magic in addition to their martial prowess to qualify for the class.

  • Base Attack Bonus: +5
  • Skills: 4 ranks of Knowledge (arcana) and 3 ranks of Spellcraft
  • Feats: Improved Initiative, Weapon Focus (any)

Class Features[]

Occult slayers gain a suite of abilities to protect themselves from magic, and to kill those who use it.


  • Hit Dice: Occult slayers give up some of the endurance typical of martial characters in favor of the ability to protect themselves against magic in other ways. Their hit dice is a d8.
  • Base Attack Bonus: Occult slayers train in combat effectively, having a base attack bonus equal to that of a fighter.
  • Saving Throws: Focusing on protection against magic means that occult slayers have a good Will saving throw, but have poor Fortitude and Reflex saving throws.
  • Skills: Occult slayers focus narrowly in a few specialized skills, as befits their focus on a specific enemy. Their class skills are Bluff (Cha), Craft (Int), Gather Information (Cha), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), and Spellcraft (Int). They gain a base of 2 skill points per level.
  • Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Like fighters, occult slayers are proficient in simple and martial weapons, all kinds of armor, and shields.


  • Magical Defense: Occult slayers have a bonus on saving throws against spells and spell-like abilities that increase with their level.
  • Weapon Bond: Occult slayers can imbue a weapon with their hatred for spellcasters. When the occult slayer scores a successful hit with that weapon on a spellcaster or a creature with spell-like abilities, it deals additional damage. The occult slayer can form a new bond with a weapon by spending a few days practicing with it.
  • Mind over Magic: Occult slayers can cause spells that target them to rebound upon the spellcaster, just as the spell turning spell allows. Higher-level occult slayers can use this feature more often.
  • Vicious Strike: Occult slayers who ready an attack to disrupt a spellcaster deal double damage if their readied attack hits.
  • Aura Vision: Occult slayers can see magical auras as if they used detect magic, though they can only see the number of magical auras.
  • Nondetection Cloak: Occult slayers gain an aura of nondetection (as the spell) that affects themselves and their possessions.
  • Blank Thoughts: Occult slayers can create a state of mental absence within themselves, becoming immune to mind-affecting effects while they do so.
