Munkir, the White Guardian, is a demon lord who rules the 77th layer of the Abyss, the Gates of Heaven.
Munkir rules jointly with Nekir, the Black Guardian. They are the Abyssal patrons of the afterlife, and are said to offer a back door into Paradise.[1]
Publication history[]
Munkir and Nekir appear in the original list of demon lords in the AD&D Monster Manual II (1e) (1983), p.35. They would be further detailed with their inclusion in the list of demon lords in the D&D 3e sourcebook Fiendish Codex I: Hordes of the Abyss (2006), p.155-157.
Creative origins[]
Munkar and Nakir are two angels appearing in real-world Islamic eschatology, although they do not appear in the Quran. Their role is to test the faithful before they can enter the afterlife.
They are described has having black eyes, tongues of fire, and wielding hammers so heavy that all of humanity cannot move them.
