The Monster Manual, released in 2000, is one of the three core rulebooks for Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition. It presents rules and game statistics for monsters, and is intended primarily for use by the Dungeon Master.

Many of the creatures in the Monster Manual were written as essentially direct translations from their Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition counterparts. For example, the mummy's armor class of 17 was set because the AD&D 2e mummy's armor class was 3, the direct equivalent in that rules system.[1]
