The book was written by Gary Gygax. Art was provided by David C. Sutherland III, Dave Trampier, Tom Wham and Jean Wells.

Release[]

The Monster Manual was released by TSR in December 1977[1] for $9.95 US.

The initial print run numbered 50,000 copies. It was notable for being the first hardcover roleplaying game book ever printed. It was intended to have been released in September 1977, but due to delays with the printer it was not released until after Christmas 1977, possibly hitting stores as late as January 1978.

The original cover art, drawn by David C. Sutherland III, depicted various creatures, including a red dragon, a unicorn, a centaur, a troll, a roper, and an owlbear. The back cover featured a manticore and a purple worm.

Subsequent printings made various changes, incorporating errata until the fourth printing, dated August 1979. From the sixth printing in 1981, the book would credit Dave Arneson as co-creator.[1]

In 1983, the seventh printing changed the cover art to a scene of an aerial battle betwen a red dragon and white pegasi. That version would have an orange spine.[1]

The fifteenth printing was made in July 1989, presumably when Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was superceded by Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition. However, some books have been spotted with a printing date of 1990, suggesting that this book continued to be published after the release of 2nd edition.[1]

In 2013, the book was re-released by Wizards of the Coast with a new cover, featuring the red dragon from the original cover.

On July 14, 2015, it was re-released in digital format. It is currently available on DriveThruRPG and Dungeon Masters Guild for $9.99.

Reception and influence[]

Sales[]

Between 1979 and 1991, the AD&D 1st edition Monster Manual sold a total of 1,145,065 copies. Sales figures for 1977-1978 are unavailable.[2]

Year Sales
1979 61,243
1980 192,227
1981 242,990
1982 171,779
1983 200,979
1984 85,344
1985 77,017
1986 31,097
1987 37,871
1988 29,649
1989 7,311
1990 5,200
1991 2,358

The drop in sales in 1989 is likely due to the release of its successor, the AD&D 2nd edition Monstrous Compendium Volume One (1989).

Critical reception[]

As of 2023, Monster Manual (1e) reached the rank of Adamantine seller on DriveThruRPG, the site's highest rating.
