This spell causes various divination spells to fail.
Original D&D[]
The spell appears initially in The Strategic Review 1-4, as part of the Illusionist class. Dragon Magazine #12 preserved this spell on the Illusionist list, as "misdetect."
- Spell Level 2
If this spell succeeds, a "detect" spell (such as Detect Magic, or Detect Good) will malfunction. The success of this spell is a ratio over the caster over the original spellcaster (for instance, a 5th-level illusionist misdirecting the spell of a 10th-level magic user has a 50% chance of success).
AD&D 2e[]
| Misdirection | |
|---|---|
| Spell Level: 2 | Rarity: Common |
| Schools: Illusion/Phantasm | |
| Components: V, S | |
| Range: 30 yds | Casting Time: 2 |
| Duration: 8 hours | Saving Throw: Negates |
| Target: 1 creature or object | |
The target of this spell reveals false information to divinations. While the spell functions, any detect spell that would reveal information about the target instead reveals some false information - it indicates the wrong area, a different creature, or the opposite of the truth. The caster of the detection spell is allowed a save vs. spell to overcome the effects. More advanced divinations (such as ESP, Know Alignment, Augury, Clairvoyance, etc.) are not affected by this spell.
