Mike Mearls is a game designer. He joined Wizards of the Coast in 2005 after working on third-party d20 System products for other publishers, most notably Iron Heroes for Monte Cook's Malhavoc Press. Mearls was lead designer on both Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition and Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition.

Mearls often uses allegories in his work.[1]

Life and career[]

Early work[]

Mearls' first contribution to the official D&D magazines was Mysterious Magic, Dragon #302 (Dec 2002), p.104.

Wizards of the Coast[]

In October 2005, Mearls joined the design team for Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition, working on redeveloping the "Orcus" draft. Mearls and Rich Baker are credited with the edition's at-will, encounter, and daily power division. Several of these design principles were backported into the D&D 3.5 sourcebook Tome of Battle: The Book of Nine Swords (2006). In May 2006 he joined the "Flywheel" 4e development team, while also writing various "Design & Development" articles for the official D&D website. Mearls was subsequently credited on the cover of the Monster Manual (4e) (2008), and worked on numerous sourcebooks for the edition.

Mearls was subsequently one of two lead developers on Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition,. Mearls served as Group Manager for the D&D R&D team, and worked to address a perceived gulf between Wizards of the Coast and the playerbase. He began playing a campaign of the Basic Set (B/X) (1981) in order to revisit the game's traditions, and from 2012 to 2014 led the development of 5th edition, while also writing an ongoing series of "Legends & Lore" articles on the official D&D website. Following the release of D&D 5e in 2014, Mearls subsequently contributed to numerous 5th edition sourcebooks.

In December 2023, Mearls was one of a large number of Wizards of the Coast employees laid off.[2] Mearls discussed the reasons for his departure in a 2025 podcast episode.[3]
