The Mewling is a demiplane belonging to the xills.
Description[]
The Mewling is described as a "humanoid harvesting ground."[1]
According to rumors among planar travelers of the Great Wheel, the High Clan xill keep human slaves in a massive hatchery or nursery in the Deep Ethereal to serve as hosts for their eggs. These humans are said to be descendants of human prisoners, captured many years ago as part of a long-term plan, and have been bred like livestock, to the point of losing their intelligence and any sense of sophistication. The slaves are also said to only rarely live beyond their late teens before they are used as egg hosts.[2]
Publication history[]
AD&D 2nd edition[]
Rumors of a High Clan xill "hatchery/nursery" were part of the xill's entry in Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix III (1998), p.120-121.
D&D 3rd edition[]
The D&D 3.5 article Multiple Dementia: A Guide to the Demiplanes in Dragon #353 (Mar 2007) first mentioned the Mewling. Although it is not explicitly stated to be the High Clan "hatchery/nursery" in its brief single-sentence description, that description makes it almost certain they are the same place.
Creative origins[]
Monte Cook was the designer credited for the Planescape Monstrous Compendium Appendix III,[3] and presumably introduced or approved of the idea of the "hatchery/nursery". However, Todd Stewart created the Mewling as one of two new demiplanes in the Dragon #353 article.[4][5]
