The caster alters reality to conform to their desires...within limits. This spell is essentially a lower-level version of the Wish spell.

Original D&D[]

Limited Wish[]

Debuted in Supplement 1: Greyhawk, for the magic-user.

  • Spell Level 7

Alters the past, present, or future to cause a wish to come true, but within limited bounds. The wish cannot grant treasure, for instance, and only part of the wish may occur. The caster may wish to erase an unfortunate adventure, for instance. Wishes must be careful: the referee may grant a wish in such a way as to kill or handicap a character.

AD&D 2e[]

Limited Wish[]

Spell Level: 7 Rarity: Common
Schools (Mage): Conjuration/Summoning, Invocation/Evocation, Zakharan Sorcerer, Wu Jen, Witch, Beggar's Path
Components: V
Range: Unlimited Casting Time: Special
Duration: Special Saving Throw: Special
Target: Special

This spell fulfills any wish of the caster, but only for a limited time, and only partially. Thus, the past, present, or future might be altered, but only for the caster, and major realities, wealth, and experience cannot be created or modified. The spell could, for instance, restore some lost hit points to the caster (or all lost hit points, but only temporarily). It could modify die rolls, change the duration of a magical effect, cause a creature to be charmed, mimic a spell of 7th level or less, etc. Greedy or incautious desires often end badly for the caster.

The casting time is spent correcting the wording of the spell. Generally, the casting time is one round. Casting this spell ages the caster 1 year per 100 years of regular life span (so humans age 1 year, half-elves and halflings age 2, dwarves and gnomes age 4, and elves age 5).
