The spell creates a false magical trap, deceiving those looking for traps.
AD&D[]
Leomund's Trap[]
Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a magic-user spell.
| Level: 2 | School: Illusion/Phantasm |
| Components: V, S, M (a piece of iron pyrite touched to the target) | |
| Range: Touch | Casting Time: 3 rounds |
| Duration: Permanent | Saving Throw: None |
| Target: Object touched | |
The target object is 80% likely to appear as if it has a trap to any who examine it. The examiner reduces this chance by 4%/level. If the illusory trap is then removed, there is only a 20% chance of the remover believing the trap to be disabled (+4% per remover level). If the trap is ignored or triggered, of course, nothing happens -- the trap is illusory.

Any character able to detect traps, or who uses a spell or ability to detect traps, is 100% certain that the target object is somehow trapped. If the trap is "sprung," of course, nothing happens - the trap is illusory. The purpose of the false trap is largely to dissuade thieves.
