A lava child is a muscular humanoid descended from earth and fire spirits.

Description[]

Appearance[]

A lava child resembles a broadly-built man, but with a curious child-like appearance. They have pinkish-white skin and a permanent smile on their face.

Personality and alignment[]

Lava children are neutral in alignment.

Abilities and traits[]

Metal objects pass through lava children without harming them as if the metal did not exist, and they can move through metal without hindrance. Any metal armor worn by a victim does nothing to protect the victim from the clawed hands or bites of lava children.

Publication history[]

AD&D 1st edition[]

The lava children first appeared in the Fiend Folio (1e) (1981). Jim Donohoe is credited as their creator.

D&D 5th edition[]

The lava child returned for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition in Waterdeep: Dungeon of the Mad Mage (2018).

Reception and influence[]

Lava children appeared in the Necromancer Press d20 System product Tome of Horrors (2002), with permission from Wizards of the Coast. This released the lava children for use under the Open Game License.

The lava children were detailed for the Pathfinder role-playing game in the sourcebook Misfit Monsters Redeemed (2010).
