Kobold Press is a game publisher, launched by Wolfgang Baur as Open Design in 2006, that originally published Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 compatible products for the d20 System. Open Design's publications were originally produced under a "patronage" (crowdfunding) model, and released exclusively to backers. However, in 2007 Open Design began publishing the magazine Kobold Quarterly, which was available to the public; by 2008 Open Design began releasing other products such as the Zobeck Gazetteer to the public, and by 2011 they were publishing works outside of the "patronage" model entirely. In 2012, Open Design began publishing under the imprint "Kobold Press," and operated exclusively under that name by the end of the year.

In 2014, Wizards of the Coast commissioned Kobold Press to produce the first two official adventures for D&D 5th edition, Hoard of the Dragon Queen and The Rise of Tiamat. Subsequently, Kobold Press produced several third-party 5th edition products, such as the Tome of Beasts (2016) and Creature Codex (2018), many of which are explicitly set in their own Midgard setting.
