Jarnsaxa is a giantess who has two sons with the Norse god Thor: Modi, and Magni.[1]

Publication history[]

D&D 3rd edition[]

Jarnsaxa is named in Deities and Demigods (3e) (2002), p.192.

Creative origins[]

Jarnsaxa appears in Norse myth. Her name means "iron knife".

In Skaldskaparmal, part of the 13th century Prose Edda, Snorri tells the story of Thor's fight with Hrungnir. Thor is assisted after the battle by Magni, son of himself and Jarnsaxa.

Snorri does not name Jarnsaxa as the mother of Thor's other son Modi, as she is in D&D canon.

Snorri describes the term "Jarnsaxa's wind" is a kenning for "courage", while "steed of Jarnsaxa" is a kenning for "wolf".

In the Poetic Edda, the poem Voluspa en skamma (the short Voluspa) names Jarnsaxa as one of the nine mothers of Heimdall.
