Causes a vast cloud of insects to decend into the area.

Original D&D[]

Debuted in Men & Magic, for the cleric. Anti-clerics can use the spell as well. Supplement 3: Eldtritch Wizardry allows druids to use the spell as well, at a lower level.

  • Spell Level 5 (cleric, anti-cleric) or 4 (druid)
  • Duration 1 day
  • Range 48"

The caster (as long as they are above ground) creates a cloud of insects covering 36 square inches. The insects obscure vision in the area, and drive off creatures of less than 3 HD from the area in a rout.

AD&D[]

Insect Plague[]

Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a cleric spell and a druid spell. .

Cleric[]

Level: 5 School: Conjuration/Summoning
Components: V, S, M (a few grains of sugar, some kernels of grain, and a smear of fat)
Range: 36" Casting Time: 1 turn
Duration: 1 turn/level Saving Throw: None
Area: 36" diameter, 6" high cloud

A hoarde of insects swarm into a great cloud. Vision is obscured in the area, limiting it to 3", and creatures in the area take 1 point of damage each round. Creautres with 2 HD or fewer simply flee in a straight line until they are 24" from the cloud. Creatures with 5 HD or fewer are allowed a morale check to avoid fleeing. The swarm does not move once it arrives.

The cloud can be driven off with heavy smoke (the swarm will not inhabit that area), and fire, lightning, an dcold will likewise keep the swarm at bay (though effects that do not last are only effective for as long as they are present).

Druid[]

Components: V, S, M (mistletoe, holly leaves, or oak leaves)
Range: 32" Casting Time: 1 turn
Duration: 1 turn/level Saving Throw: None
