The hypnotism spell creates a hypnotic pattern that renders enemies' minds malleable.

Original D&D[]

Hypnotism[]

Introduced along with the Illusionist class in Strategic Review 1-4. It was removed from their list in Dragon Magazine #12, though the similar spell, hypnotic suggestion was offered.

  • Spell Level 1
  • Range: 8"

This spell is cast by looking the target in the eyes. The caster has a +2 chance of success with this spell. If successful, the entity comes completely under the influence of the caster until the effect is dispelled.

Hypnotic Suggestion[]

Dragon Magazine #12 debuted this spell on the Illusionist list.

  • Spell Level 1
  • Range: 8"

This spell is cast by looking the target in the eyes. The caster has a +2 chance of success with this spell. If successful, the entity comes completely under the influence of the caster until the effect is dispelled, and the caster may implant suggestions in their mind that they then carry out when the spell ends (anything short of suicide). The target gets a saving throw every time the caster implants a suggestion, and any one successful save breaks the caster's influence.

Multiple Hypnotic Suggestions[]

Dragon Magazine #12 debuted this spell on the Illusionist list.

  • Spell Level 3
  • Range: 8"

This spell is cast by looking the target in the eyes. The caster influences 1d4 targets.

Hypnotize Monster[]

Dragon Magazine #12 debuted this spell on the Illusionist list.

  • Spell Level 3
  • Range 12"

This spell is cast by looking the target in the eyes. The caster has a +2 chance of success with this spell. If successful, the target comes completely under the influence of the magic-user until it is dispelled. This can affect any creature. If the creatures are animals, or have less than four hit dice, the caster may affect up to 3d6 of them.
