Holds shut some door, gate, window, or other opening.
Original D&D[]
Hold Portal[]
The spell first appeared in Men & Magic, for the magic-user.
- Spell Level 1
The spell holds shut some opening (such as a door or a gate). Roll 2d6 for the duration in turns. It can be dispelled, or shattered by an anti-magical creature, and a knock spell opens the portal anyway.
Wizard Lock[]
The spell first appeared in Men & Magic, for the magic-user.
- Spell Level 2
The spell holds shut some opening (such as a door or a gate). It lasts until it is dispelled. A knock spell will open the door without dispelling the wizard lock, and a magic-user three levels above the caster can move through the sealed opening unhindered.
AD&D[]
Hold Portal[]
Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a magic-user spell.
| School: Alteration | |
| Level: 1 | Components: V |
| Range: 2"/level | Casting Time: 1 Segment |
| Duration: 1 round/level | Saving Throw: None |
| Area: 80 square feet/level | |
Magically bars a door, gate, or valve of wood, metal, or stone, holding it just as tight as if it were barred and locked. The portal can still be broken through or battered down. Extra-dimensional creatures such as fiends or elementals, will shatter the portal. A magic-user of more than 4 levels above the caster's level can open the held portal without a problem. A knock spell or a dispel magic spell will negate this spell.
Wizard Lock[]
Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a magic-user spell
| Level: 2 | School: Transmutation |
| Components: V, S | |
| Range: Touch | Casting Time: 2 segments |
| Duration: Permanent | Saving Throw: None |
| Target: an object with an area up to 30 square feet/level | |
The target is magically locked shut. The object can be broken open, and a dispel magic removes the lock. A knock will also bypass the spell, for a time, and a magic-user more than 4 levels higher than the caster can also bypass the lock (neither of these dispels the wizard lock). Extra-dimensional creature are still subject to a wizard lock, and do not shatter it as they do hold portal.
DM's Advice: The caster can always pass through their own wizard lock's.
