This option, presented in Races of Stone, allows a gnome who takes illusionist levels to swap out certain illusionist abilities for other abilities.

Level 1

Gnome Illusion Spells

A gnome illusionist who takes this level choose one of the following schools that they can cast spells in, in which to take a -1 caster level penalty: evocation, transmutation, or conjuration. At first level, the gnome illusionist cannot cast any spells from this school. In exchange for this, the gnome illusionist can use their wizard level as their caster level for their racial spell-like abilities. In addition, they can prepare the following spells at the indicated spell level, rather than their normal spell level.

  • 0-Level: silent image, ventriloquism
  • 1st-level: Leomund's trap, minor image
  • 2nd-level: illusory script, major image
  • 3rd-level: illusory wall
  • 4th-level: persistant image
  • 5th-level: programmed image

Level 5

Extended Illusions

A gnome illusionist who takes this level does not gain a bonus feat, and does not automatically learn two spells. In exchange, when they cast an illusion spell that has a duration other than instantaneous, the duration of the spell is doubled. A spell with a duration of "concentration" lasts an extra 1d4 rounds. One with a duration of "concentration" plus some length of time has double the additional time.

Level 10

Insidious Illusions

A gnome illusionist who takes this level does not gain a bonus feat, and does not automatically learn two spells. In exchange, when a creature employs a divination spell, spell-like ability, or magic-item that would detect or pierce an illusion spell that they cast, the creature must make a caster level check (DC 11 + the gnome illusionist's caster level) to successfully detect or pierce the illusion. The detecting creature only gets one check for each spell or effect used, regardless of how many illusions are present.
