From the Ashes is a 286-page sourcebook for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition released in October 1992. It is a setting book which advances the timeline to the year 585 CY, following the Greyhawk Wars.

Official synopsis[]

The dust has settled. The smoke has cleared. The war machines of Greyhawk's armies have ground to a halt.

In the aftermath of the great war, the people of Oerik piece together, some struggling to retain their homes, others pilgrimaging to the cities, searching for opportunities. And searching for answers.

Who is in power? Which borders still stand, and which have been dissolved? Can anyone be trusted, or have Scarlet Brotherhood agents infiltrated every inn and tavern?

The lands of Greyhawk are forever changed, but provide more opportunities than ever for adventure and danger. Characters of all levels will find challenges and intrigue lurking in every alley and behind every tree.

This boxed set includes three poster maps of the Greyhawk lands, five new monsters, twenty cardsheets, two 96-page booklets describing the recovering nations and the Powers of Greyhawk, and endless opportunities and adventure.

Content[]

The boxed set includes two booklets:

  • Atlas of the Flanaess
  • Campaign Book

It also includes twenty cardsheets, three poster maps, and five Monstrous Compendium pages.

Development and release[]

Development[]

The book was written by Carl Sargent. Art was provided by Darlene, Jeff Easley, Sarah Feggestad, Ken Frank, Dave LaForce, Eric Olson, Robin Raab and Valerie Valusek.

The accessory was the first major update of the entire campaign setting to be published after the first boxed set, World of Greyhawk Fantasy Game Setting (1983). From the Ashes focuses on the situation on the Flanaess in the immediate aftermath of the Greyhawk Wars.

The tone of the materials is intentionally darker and more grim than publications set in the pre-Wars era, and was designed to re-energize TSR's sales of Greyhawk-related publications.

Release[]

From the Ashes was released by TSR in October 1992 for $20.00 US, $24.00 Canadian, or £11.99 GBP.

On April 15, 2014, it was re-released in digital format. It is currently available on DriveThruRPG and Dungeon Masters Guild for $9.99.

Reception and influence[]

Critical reception[]

World of Greyhawk creator Gary Gygax was critical of the direction which TSR took his setting after he left the company in 1985, referring to this particular boxed set as "From the Asses".[1]

As of 2023, From the Ashes reached the rank of Platinum seller on DriveThruRPG.
