Flame strike is a spell that calls down a pillar of flame to burn the caster's enemies.

Publication history[]

AD&D 1st edition[]

Flame strike first appeared in the Players Handbook (1e) (1978), as a 5th-level evocation spell for clerics.

AD&D 2nd edition[]

Flame strike returned in the Player's Handbook (2e) (1989), as a 5th-level evocation spell for priests. It was part of the Combat sphere for priests. The Priest's Spell Compendium Volume One (1999) designated flame strike a common spell.

D&D 3rd edition[]

Flame strike returned in the Player's Handbook (3.0) (2000) and Player's Handbook (3.5) (2003). In both books it was a evocation spell with the fire descriptor, available to clerics and druids, as well as being a domain spell for the Sun and War domains. It was a 5th-level spell for clerics, as well as for the Sun and War domains, but a 4th-level spell for druids.

D&D 4th edition[]

Flame strike returned in the Player's Handbook (4e) (2008), as a level 9 daily prayer for clerics.

D&D 5th edition[]

Flame strike returned in the Player's Handbook (5e) (2014), as a 5th-level evocation spell for clerics. The spell was also available at the same level to warlocks with The Fiend or The Celestial as their otherworldly patron, or to paladins with the Oath of Devotion.
