Elemental is a creature type in Dungeons & Dragons.

Overview[]

Elementals are creatures from the Elemental Planes.[1]

Examples of elementals include air, earth, fire, and water elementals, genies, and invisible stalkers.[1]

Publication history[]

Basic D&D[]

Elementals were considered part of the conjuration type in AC9 Creature Catalogue (1986). They were moved to the planar monster type in the Rules Cyclopedia (1991).

AD&D 2nd edition[]

While the Monstrous Manual (1993) did not have creature types, many elementals were collected together under the entries for "Elemental", "Elemental, Air Kin", "Elemental, Earth Kin", "Elemental, Fire Kin", "Elemental, Water Kin", and "Elemental, Composite".

D&D 3rd edition[]

The elemental type was introduced in the Monster Manual (3.0) (2000) and retained for the Monster Manual (3.5) (2003). The outsider type also included some elementals, such as genies.[2]

D&D 4th edition[]

The elemental origin replaced the elemental type in the Monster Manual (4e) (2008). The elemental origin tied creatures to either the Elemental Chaos or the Abyss.[3] Elemental creatures could be animates, beasts, humanoids, or magical beasts.

D&D 5th edition[]

The elemental type returned in the Monster Manual (5e) (2014).
