Dragon is a creature type in Dungeons & Dragons.

Overview[]

Dragons are large and powerful reptilian creatures.[1] Dragons often have wings and breath weapons.[2]

The type includes both true dragons, such as the chromatic and metallic dragons, and other creatures such as wyverns.[1] The latter category are sometimes called lesser dragons.[citation needed]

Publication history[]

Basic D&D[]

Dragons were initially considered part of the monster type in AC9 Creature Catalogue (1986). However, dragons became their own type in the Rules Cyclopedia (1991). In the Rules Cyclopedia, wyverns were part of a subtype called dragon-kin, which also included creatures such as chimerae, hydrae, and salamanders.[3]

D&D 3rd edition[]

The dragon type was introduced in the Monster Manual (3.0) (2000) and retained for the Monster Manual (3.5) (2003).

D&D 4th edition[]

The dragon type became a keyword in the Monster Manual (4e) (2008). Creatures of any type or origin could be dragons, but magical beasts were the most common.

D&D 5th edition[]

The dragon type returned in the Monster Manual (5e) (2014).
