Erases a magical effect
Original D&D[]
The spell first appeared in Men & Magic, for the magic-user. Supplement 3: Eldtritch Wizardry allows druids to use the spell as well, at a higher level.
- Spell Level 3 (magic-user) or 4 (druid)
- Duration 1 turn
- Range 12"
If this spell succeeds, a particular magical effect will cease to function for the duration. The success of this spell is a ratio over the caster over the original spellcaster (for instance, a 5th-level illusionist misdirecting the spell of a 10th-level magic user has a 50% chance of success).
AD&D[]
Dispel Magic[]
Debuted in the Player's Handbook as a spell for clerics, druids, and maigc-users. The Dungeon Master's Guide gives additional advice.
Cleric[]
Level: 3 | School: Abjuration |
Components: V, S | |
Range: 6" | Casting Time: 6 segments |
Duration: Permanent | Saving Throw: None |
Area: 3" cube |
Magic in the area is neutralized. It won't affect most magic items (though it will affect potions, which are treated as 12th level spells), but it will remove spell effects from creatures or objects and from the area of effect. The base chance for a successful dispel is 50%, plus 5% per level of the caster above the level of the caster of the original spell. If the caster is of lower level, the success chance is reduced by 2% per level of the caster below the level of the caster of the original spell. If cast against the caster's own magic, it will be automatically successful.
DM's Advice: If cast specifically on a magic item (other than an artifact or a relic), it will cause it to be non-operational for 1 round if the item fails a save. Items not in the posession of creautres get no save.
Druid[]
Level: 4 | School: Abjuration |
Components: V, S, M (mistletoe) | |
Range: 8" | Casting Time: 6 segments |
Duration: Permanent | Saving Throw: None |
