Coal devils are hellforged devils with burning bodies who fight at the forefront of the battles for the Nine Hells.[1]

Description[]

Coal devils are misshapen humanoids made of knobby, twisted coal chunks, with bodies always aflame and surrounded by thick clouds of smoke. They have short legs and long arms that end in clumsy fists, and small heads with expressions of unending screaming.[1]

Personality[]

Coal devils are famously loyal and reliable, and though not smart, they are somewhat socially competent.[1]

Abilities[]

Coal devils are strong, and durable compared to other devils, but slow and uncoordinated. Their burning bodies are vulnerable to cold, but immune to fire, and they can focus the flames burning with them and project them outwards as burning breath.[1]

The continuous burning of coal devils produces a short range cloud of ash, smoke and cinder which obscures vision and leaves any creature that must breathe air choking on the fumes. Coal devils themselves are unaffected, and have the incredibly precise hearing to navigate without sight, but the clouds can be temporarily dispersed with strong winds and an inability to hear forces them to rely on their incredibly weak vision.[1]

Combat[]

Coal devils rely on their smoking aura to hinder and blind their enemy while they smash them with their fists, their melee prowess making them excellent as protectors.[1]

Society[]

Coal devils serve as enforcers and shock troops in the armies of Hell often used to absorb the front of attacks or spearhead assaults, as their tough bodies making them well-suited as front-like soldiery. They are sometimes assigned as bodyguards to mortal wizards and clerics who further the interests of powerful baatezu. They can work alone, in pairs, or in gangs of 3-8.[1]
