Cloyer Bulse the Magsman is a male human 13th-level thief who appears in G1-3 Against the Giants (1981)'s list of original tournament characters.[1]

Appearance and personality[]

Cloyer is of exceptional dexterity. He speaks the langauge of the dwarves, as well as many monsters. His prized possessions include a magically enhanced short sword and a displacer cloak.

Cloyer is True Neutral in alignment.

History[]

Cloyer Bulse was one of a number of now-legendary adventurers who volunteered to lead a strike team against the giants who had been raiding human lands. One of the adventurers' first targets was an ill-fated raid on the frost giants of the Glacial Rift.

After the death of two allies, Cloyer's party surrendered the frost giants and were taken prisoner. Only then did he learn that the party leader, Gleep Wurp the Eyebiter, was working as a spy all along.[2]

Cloyer Bulse was tortured, killed, and eaten by the giants. His ally Fonkin Hoddypeak survived, and would later be rescued.[2]

Creative origins[]

Gygax named tournament characters in this module after entries in entries in a dictionary of obscure words, Poplollies and Bellibones: A Celebration of Lost Words. "Cloyer" is defined as "a pickpocket's accomplice or the one who intrudes into a bunch of thieves to claim a share." "Bulse" means "a package of diamonds or gold dust," from the Latin "bursa", "purse". "Magsman" is defined as "a swindler."[3][4]
