Dungeons & Dragons Lore Wiki

Cavaliers are noble mounted knights who are capable of devestating charge attacks. It is a full 10-level prestige class.

Publication history

AD&D 1st edition

The Cavalier was officially introduced in Dragon #72 (Apr 1983) as a fighter sub-class. It returned in Unearthed Arcana (1e) (1985), when it became a main class and the Paladin became a sub-class of Cavalier. In order to become a cavalier, the character must be in service to some a deity, noble, order, or special cause. And initially, the cavalier will be of Good alignment, whether Lawful, Neutral or Chaotic. It was also limited to the Elven, Half-Elven and Human Races.

  • Skills: Handle Animal 4 ranks, Knowledge (nobility and royalty) 4 ranks, Ride 6 ranks

Class Features

Level 1

Continuing Features

Cavaliers continue to improve their special mount, if they have one.

Weapon and Armor Proficiencies

Cavaliers become proficient with all simple and martial weapons, all types of armor, and shields.

Ride Bonus

+2 competence bonus on Ride checks. Increases by +2 at level 4, 7, and 9.

Courtly Knowledge

Gain a competence bonus on Knowlege (nobility and royalty) checks equal to your Cavalier level.

Mounted Weapon Bonus (Lance)

+1 competence bonus on attack rolls with the lance when mounted. This increases by +1 every 4 levels.

Level 2

Deadly Charge

You can declare a charge attack ot be a deadly charge. If you hit with that charge attack, you deal x3 damage (or x4 damage with a lance). This doesn't stack with the Spirited Charge feat. You can do this 1/day for every 2 cavalier levels.

Mounted Weapon Bonus (Sword)

+1 competence bonus on attack rolls with swords when mounted. This increases by +1 every 4 levels.

Level 3

Burst of Speed

A mount can move up to x4 its normal speed when you make a charge attack. If you use this more than once per day on a given mount, it must make a DC 20 Will save after the charge or take 2d6 points of damage.

Level 6

Full Mounted Attack

Your mount can take a single move action and you may still use the Full Attack action.

Level 10

Unstoppable Charge

Your Deadly Charge damage increases to x4, or x5 with a lance.

Willem the Bold (CR 10) is a Fighter 8/Cavalier 2 intensely focused on mounted combat and high-damage attacking.
