A character class is an archetype that describes a category of character in Dungeons & Dragons. The classes originally were designed as the character's adventuring profession. It initially determined the character's Hit Die Type, Hit Points, Spell Abilities, Class Level Limit, Armor Proficiencies, Weapon Proficiencies, Oil Usage, Poison Usage, Level Titles, and what special abilities they have. In later, additions class level limits and level titles were removed.

The best known classes are barbarian, bard, cleric (or priest), druid, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue (or thief), sorcerer, warlock, and wizard (or mage, or magic-user).

This category includes special types of character class, including: 2nd edition class kits; 3rd edition prestige classes;4th edition power sources, primary roles, and paragon paths; 5th edition subclasses, and variant classes.

This category does not include Original classes of Dwarf, Elf and Hobbit or BECMI classes of Dwarf, Elf, Halfling, other races from the Creature Crucible series, nor Gazetteers.
