AD&D 1st edition[]
Cats were first detailed in Monster Manual II (1e) (1983), which described the domestic cat and the wild cat.
AD&D 2nd edition[]
Cats returned in the Monstrous Compendium Volume Two (1989), which included both house cats and wild cats under the mammal, small entry. Cats were given their own entry in the Monstrous Manual (1993), cat, small, which listed the domestic cat and wild cat along with the elven cat.
D&D 3rd edition[]
The cat was listed in the Animals section of the Monster Manual (3.0) (2000) and the Monster Manual (3.5) (2003), where it was assigned the animal creature type.
D&D 4th edition[]
The cat was described in Dragon #399 (May 2011), where it was categorized as a natural beast.
D&D 5th edition[]
The cat was updated for Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition in the Miscellaneous Creatures section of the Monster Manual (5e) (2014), where it was assigned the beast type.
